Third-Party Console Round-up
Many have heard of the Flashback, some have heard of the Supaboy. There appears to be a somewhat niche market for third parties launching their own gaming devices. If you are into retro gaming, but don't wish to unwrap your prize collection of game consoles and vintage handhelds to play that old classic, these may be just what you are looking for. There are lots to choose from, although getting your mitts on one might be a little more problematic, due to the fact that most are sold from China. Still, here at Retro Isle we felt it only right to explore their pro's and con's in a little more detail. In actuality, this article is somewhat late as not all these devices covered are still available for sale, but nonetheless, it's easy to get confused about your options, so let's crack on and review each of the most common we've found.
Something to note right at the start is that these consoles and handhelds come in three distinct flavours:
1) Those that have games built-into the ROM and have no means for you to add your own.
2) Those that provide a slot where you can insert original games cartridges from the console it emulates.
3) Those that provide no games out of the box, but the device has an SD card slot (or similar) through which you can load game ROM files. Some are Linux-based, others run Android.
Prices vary also. The most simple plug and play console can be had for around $40, whereas a fully kitted out Linux mini computer is more like $500.

Sega may (sadly) be out of the hardware business itself, but like some other once mighty companies, it's not above licensing its brand for others to use as they see fit. The latest device to emerge out of that arrangement is the Sega Zone, which takes a perfectly fine Genesis console (complete with a cartridge slot) and adds a pair of Wiimote-like controllers in an attempt to keep up with the times.
The Sega Zone is built off a similar console called the "Zone 40" (with 40 games) which in turn was built off the "Zone Wireless Gaming Console" (with 7 games). With the Sega Zone there are 50 built in games, 20 of which are Sega Mega Drive titles, 14 are "arcade games" and 16 are "Interactive Sports games" which make use of the motion control technology.
Mega Drive games included:
• Kid Chameleon • Chakan: The Forever Man •Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master • Sonic & Knuckles • Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball • Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle • Comix Zone • Altered Beast • Arrow Flash • Bonanza Bros. • The Ooze • Crack Down • Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine • Ecco the Dolphin • ESWAT: City Under Siege • Fatal Labyrinth • Flicky • Gain • ound • Golden Axe • Jewel Master
Dingoo A320
Manufacturer: Dingoo
Sold by: Dingoo Digital (http://dingoo-digital.com)
Price: £69.99 (UK), $109 (USA)
Release Date: February 2009
Emulates: Lots! (Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive, Capcom CPS1 and CPS2, Neo Geo, ...)
Games Included: 0
Cartridge Slot: No
Expansion Slot: Yes, Mini-SD card slot (supports up to 4GB)
The Dingoo A320 is a handheld gaming device that plays games, music and videos. More importantly is the open source gaming. The A320 is available to consumers in white or black. First released in 2009 it has now sold over 1 million devices. The standard all around emulation is fantastic, there isn't a comparable unit out-of-the-box on the market.
It comes with 4GB memory built-in, so with the 4GB SD card slot, you get a total storage capacity of 8GB. It also gets a TV Out socket (and it comes with the cable), convenient Mini-USB charging socket, and has a 2.8" QVGA (320x200) screen. Physically it is slightly smaller than a Nintendo DS.
Out of the box, the A320 (and the later A320e) come with uC / OS-II as its operating system. If you go through the tricky installation of the developmental dual-booting Dingux operating system, this allows the A320 to switch between its stock firmware and a fully-fledged version of Linux. Early days of development have already seen a Dingux version of MAME4ALL running on the console. Offering support for over 2000 arcade roms it silences many of the complaints raised by users over the console's built-in emulators.
Pros:
- Awesome retro-gaming goodness - so many games to play so little time! If you ever need to kill time these will overdo it!
- Good battery life, 7 hours+ on a single charge is quite normal
- The nice 2.8" screen is just the right size for gaming on the go - not too small and pretty enjoyable
- Very large userbase/community, with many dedicated websites and forums solely dedicated on the development of dingoo-related stuff, the dingoo has a pretty good future ahead!
- Awesome NES,GBA, GBC, CPS1, Game Gear, PCEngine/TG16 (on dingux), Sega megadrive (picodrive, dingux) emulation - almost as good as the real thing! Wow thats a lot of consoles!!
- While the D-pad is okay, its not too good for complex fighting game movements, plus shoulder buttons needs to be bigger
- Video player do not handle very large files too well
- No 2 player action on the A320
- The charger that came in the package looks like it might explode anytime soon (and smelt of burnt plastic! yikes!) - Got an iPod/iPhone usb charger? Use those instead
- You need to do some technical stuff to get the dingoo up and running with dingux, not exactly hard to do but for some people re-flashing firmwares could be pretty scary!
- SNES emulation needs a little improvement (but very playable with most games), NeoGeo and CPS2 emulation needs to be faster (too much frame skipping in the native OS emu)
In December 2011, Dingoo released a refresh of the A320 called the A320E ("Enhanced"), available for $79.99. This enhanced model comes with a 400x240 resolution 16:9 screen that's slightly larger at 3.2" over the 2.8" of the older A320. Physically, the A320E is slightly longer at 132x57x15mm to accommodate this wider screen, and is more easily distinguishable from an older A320 because it has full-coloured X,Y,A and B buttons as with the A380. Inside it has a newer processor, the Ingenic 4755, which is the same one used in the A380 (See further down) running at 500 MHz. Think of it as a stripped A80; the difference being the A320E does not support multiplayer/netplay, it doesn't have a G-sensor or vibration motor. Where the A380 has an internal SD card for its firmware, the A320E does not, so updating the firmware is not easy on the A320E.
TechRadar has a full review of the A320 here, and GadgetReview also have one here.

Dingoo A330 ["Mini Game King"]
Manufacturer: Dingoo
Sold by: Dingoo Digital (http://dingoo-digital.com)
Price: €99 EUR / $109.99
Release Date: 2011
Emulates: Lots! (Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive, Capcom CPS1 and CPS2, Neo Geo, ...)
Games Included: 0
Cartridge Slot: No
Expansion Slot: Yes, Mini-SD card slot (supports up to 4GB)
The Dingoo A330 is a minor upgrade over the A320. Essentially it's got the same specifications as the A320, apart from having double the RAM (although the native firmware only uses 32 MB of it!), and it comes with wireless support (for wireless controllers when using the TV out functionality). Cosmetically it resembles a PSP, although it's much smaller than an actual PSP. Because it runs the same firmware as the A320, Dingux installs just fine, and Dingux apps run fine. The general recommendation is that if you've got an A320, stick with it, otherwise buy the A330 - it fixes a number of issues with the A320.
- CPU: 400MHz Jz4740 Revised Processor and Motherboard
- RAM: 64MB
- Storage Capacity: 4GB
- Display: TFT 2.8" QVGA LCD, 320x240
- Battery: 1700MAh Lithium ion battery
- Dimensions: 132×57×15 (length x width x height, in mm)
- Weight: 120g
- Internal 2.4GHz Receiver Module, supports 2.4GHz wireless controller
The LCD screen seems more colourful, and is definitely an improvement over the one found in the Dingoo A320. The Dingoo A330 is using the same IL9331 LCD Controller as found in newer versions of the Dingoo A320.
The Dingoo A330 has a near identical IO/button layout to the Dingoo A320, with some nice differences. These can mostly be seen as enhancements.
A thorough set of high-resolution pics of the Dingoo A330 is here.
Dingoo A380 ["Mini Game King"]
Manufacturer: Dingoo
Sold by: Dingoo Digital (http://dingoo-digital.com)
Price: $119.99
Release Date: January 2011
Emulates: Lots! (Game Boy/Color/Advance, NES, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, Capcom CPS1 and CPS2, Neo Geo, ...)
Games Included: 0
Cartridge Slot: No
Expansion Slot: Yes, Micro-SD card slot
The Dingoo A380 is a step-up from its predecessor, the Dingoo A320. Where the A320's emulation of Mega Drive and SNES games was less than satisfactory, the A380 runs completely smoothly. It gets an additional 32MB of built-in RAM, has another 100 MHz of speed on the A320 and a slightly larger 3.2" diagonal 16:9 screen, It's not all roses though. 3D support is still a non-event (don't try to run Starfox), and the PSX emulator's performance is still on par with the A320's. All in all though, it's a much better handheld than the A320. Great support from developers and enthusiasts ensures the Dingoo A320 and A380 will be around for a while yet. The A380 is available in white, black, and pink.
- Small form factor, fits well in pocket.
- Simple interface, usable rather quickly. Most sellers will have games already installed but they’re usually in Chinese.
- Plays GB, GBC, CPS, Genesis, SMS and other custom emulators reasonably well.
- TF card slot allows up to 32GB, good for MAME roms
- Allows use of wireless controllers, of course they are proprietary.
- Nicer aspect ratio of screen for movies. playing old games though the filled screen becomes quite squat.
- For most things this is the best hand-held emulator out there.
- No touchscreen. It may be a con for most but I hate touchscreens, I like the nice sturdy screen on the Dingoo.
Cons:
- The aforementioned small form factor is also a pain if you have large hands. Playing this can become painful especially with the square corners.
- L and R buttons are too small and set too far to the outside (for adult hands anyways).
- There is no button(s) for volume control, this must be done with the software.
- NES emulation isn’t quite fast enough. Kirby’s Adventure in Dreamland is sluggish but SMB is the same as always
- SNES emulation is atrocious, even with a updated firmware. Mode 7 games absolutely decimate its performance.
- TV out is PAL. Not so good if you need NTSC (At least I haven’t seen a setting for it)
- Very little to configure. changing some stuff that’s bothersome can be impossible.
- In some emulators, they removed the ability to hotkey savestates.
- Power button is flimsy, it’ll probably break relatively soon.
