John and Ste Pickford (Unknown) 22nd Mar 2013 11:48Our first SNES game, and a sequel to Software Creations' NES game Solstice. Called Equinox in the west (where Solstice wasn't a big hit).
Probably the first SNES game to begin development outside of Japan, it was actually released over a year after the console's western release, due to a conflict with Nintendo of America over a technical issue which blocked approval of the game.
Ste writes: "Sony produced a beautiful guidebook for Solstice 2 in Japan (in common with most Japanese games, it seems), which had brilliant drawings of every single room (several hundred, each containing an isometric puzzle) in every dungeon, explaining the solution to every puzzle.
It must have took them ages, as we didn't have any involvement, or provide any data or designs for them to work from. In fact, we didn't have any drawings of any of the rooms ourselves, as they were all built in code using a little scripting language.
So somebody completely unconnected with the game's development sat and played the game through to the end and drew a solution to every room. Brilliant!
Sony later told us that they guidebook sold more copies than the game itself...
(Thanks to Chun Wah Kong for kindly donating a copy of the Japanese Solstice 2 to the Pickford Brothers archive, to replace my only copy which was stolen in a house robbery.)"
