NC - Amstrad announces Colour Notebook
Cebit: Amstrad unveils color notebook computer - Amstrad Consumer Electronics PLC
****Cebit: Amstrad Unveils Color Notebook Computer 03/13/92 HANNOVER, GERMANY, 1992 MAR 13 (NB) -- Amstrad has unveiled a color notebook computer at the Cebit Faire in Hannover. The machine -- still in the alpha test stages -- will ship during the summer, the company has announced.
According to David Hennell, director of international marketing, the machine's screen is based on leading edge technology -- a departure for the company, which is usually associated with releasing existing technology at lower prices.
So why the change of heart for Amstrad? Hennell said that, while Amstrad has traditionally been strong in declining markets, when most producers are getting out of that market segment, the notebook is the exact opposite.
"The color notebook is a demonstration of our ability to produce leading edge stuff," he said, adding that it enhances the company's credibility factor. Pricing on the color portable will be announced closer to shipment dates, company officials said.
Amstrad is currently the darling of the budget computer marketplace in the U.K. According to the latest market research figures, the company has almost a one third market share of the portable marketplace, although Toshiba has an equally strong presence.
