"A puzzle game with your favourite Capcom fighters, how can you go wrong?"

What happens when you mix your favourite Capcom fighters with a puzzle game? Well, you get Super Puzzle Fighter! This game integrates some of the best fighters of Capcom from Ryu (Street Fighter) to Morrigan (Dark Stalkers) with a very unique and addictive puzzle game.

Story...

As far as story goes...there isn't one. Unlike most puzzle games where there's a pretty mediocre storyline, Super Puzzle Fighter avoids all this by skipping the story all together.

Gameplay...

This is where the game really gets your attention (as every other game should). When you start to play a game, whether it's the Arcade Mode or duking it out with a buddy, you are presented with several fighters you may recognize. One of the things this game gives each character is different attributes (although they are not shown), unlike many other puzzle games where the only thing different is their voice. Each fighter has their own strengths and weaknesses which you must find out through excessive playing of the game. Some characters may do well with chains, others with power moves (both will be explained). Also, each character uses a signature move, so you'll still be able to see Ryu's hadouken ^.^

The puzzle game is much like any other one, you have the choice to eliminate several pieces at once (a power move), or destroy them in succession (a chain). In Super Puzzle Fighter, you must destroy gems. Unlike other puzzle games, you do not destroy the gems by putting two or more of the same colour next to each other, but you must find these gems called Crash Gems which are distinguishable from the normal gems. When you put a Crash Gem next to a normal gem of the same colour, you will destroy all of the same coloured gems touching. Like other puzzle games, the bigger of a chain or power move you do, the bigger of an attack you will do to your opponent, which is usually a barrage of blocks or something to fill up his/her screen. In Super Puzzle Fighter, when you execute an attack, a number will appear on your opponent's screen, and your opponent can block the attack by doing his/her own attack. One little flaw in the gameplay is luck. When you're at the last couple seconds before game over, usually you may find a life saver that'll pretty much win you the game. Unlike games like Tetris Attack or Kirby's Avalanche, when you're just about to be finished, your fate can be determined as to what comes next. But I'm not saying other games have no luck at all, sure they do, but Super Puzzle Fighter may have one of the bigger luck factors. This puzzle system is quite unique and very addictive.

But that's not all! You can also unlock various objects and goodies by completing a mode called Street Puzzle. In Street Puzzle, you can use one of the eight default characters in the game and face opponents, once you defeat them, you will get an item which can either be a Sound Test for a certain character, or a code for a secret character. This mode can keep you busy for a while.

All in all, the gameplay is superb.

10/10

Graphics...

These graphics are some that you will expect on any puzzle game, not great, but not dreadful. These graphics equal that of just about any fighting game for the PlayStation. The graphics aren't terrible but they aren't prize winners either.

7.5/10

Sound...

Out of all the aspects of this game, sound may be the most annoying of all. You will go insane after the many chimes and voices of this game. While playing, everytime you destroy gems, your character will yell a random taunt, and boy does it start to get tedious. After playing this game for about thirty minutes, you can't get the voices out of your head, it's pure madness! And not only do the gameplay sounds get annoying, even the menu screen. I don't know if you've heard of an annoying menu screen, but if you haven't you should see this game, you hear this chime everytime you move the cursor, and it'll give you a headache before you can start your game. But I guess it isn't all bad...there's...nevermind, it's bad.

1/10

Replayability

Despite the sounds, it still does not destroy the replay in this game. You can play this game forever, trying to get all the items (although it doesn't take too long...) and to master the chains and power moves of this game. You may also be breaking your controller after trying to beat some bosses *coughcough*Akuma*coughcough* But it still does not diminish your spirit to try again...after you're done pouting.

8/10

Buy, Rent, Trash?

BUY! If you can find this game. Nowadays, this game is really rare, almost as rare as Chrono Trigger for the SNES. You may find some on EBay, but the prices can get pretty outrageous. If you happen to see a copy of this game at your local game store for less than forty bucks, go for it, you will not be sorry.
