"Good submarine strategy game"

688 Attack Sub is the best submarine-based game I have ever played (not to mention the ONLY submarine-based game I have ever played.) I first played it a few years ago on the Sega Channel and I really enjoyed it.

Story: You are the new captain of a war sub and you have a variety of missions to accomplish. Not a great story, but good enough.

Graphics: The graphics weren't that great but they certainly weren't the worst I have ever seen on a Genesis game either for that matter. There are a lot of blues and greys in the game for colors (which is what you would probably expect to find on a submarine.) There are some nice underwater views and over-water views via the periscope. Like I said, the graphics aren't too good by today's standards, but they are decent for a game that game out such a while ago like this game.

Sound: The sound effects are pretty good. When you launch a torpedo, you hear the whoosh of it entering the water; when you activate the sonar, you can hear the sounds of it scanning of the area. There are actually some voices in this game which is kind of surprising based on its age but it is a nice feature (even though the voices are only saying things like 'torpedo launched' and 'target accquired.)

Gameplay: Most of the game all you do is point and click on the things you want to do. At the beginning of the game, you start on on the bridge and you choose where to go, though you have to go to the comm. room first to recieve your mission orders. You can use the sonar to detect enemy subs and torpedoes that may be approaching. You get some nice weaponry to use against the enemy also. Some of the things that will help you in your mission are the ability to raise and lower the periscope and antenna. However, if you do those things too much, the enemy will spot you and the mission will be a failure.

Fun Factor: I enjoyed this game and if you like strategy games and you have some patience, then you probably will too.

Replay Value: There are a number of missions to play and they vary in difficulty. After you beat the game, you will probably want to play through it again at least once, since you can complete the missions in different ways in some cases.

Overall: All of the above lead up to a good game. While this isn't one of my favorite games, I did enjoy playing it and I still do sometimes. If you are interested in it, you should try Funcoland or eBay since you can't rent Genesis games in most places anymore. You probably won't have to pay much for the game either, so I would reccomend that you give this game a chance.
