I never really took to Populous that much, but Bullfrog got it just right
with Powermonger, as far as I'm concerned. You control a tribe in a
complex 3D landscape, that must survive the elements, be fed, and above
all conquer the other tribes. By developing a large, well armed and well
fed population you can sally forth, looting, plundering and causing severe
discomfort to sheep. The powerful atmosphere is helped by the clever use
of a wide range of sounds. There is a link up option available, which
should definitely be experienced. It's fascinating and highly realistic
that two people fighting each other in the same battle can come away with
a totally different conception of what happened, and who won!
