Whoabro (Unknown) 24th Mar 2013 05:43"This game is a disgrace to the word "Pirate"."
It was not long ago I was bored and looking for an old game to play. Then I stumbled upon “Pirates of the Barbary Coast” for the Commodore 64. I was instantly interested, considering I, myself, am a pirate. But boy, was I disappointed. Not only do you NOT play as a pirate, but throughout the game, you're getting punked by one! What's the fun in that!?
By the way, the following rating system is out of ten. (example: 2/10)
Plot/Story- 2
You play the role of a captain who's daughter is kidnapped by a pirate known as “Bloodthroat”. He puts the ransom up for 50,000 gold. Naturally, instead of being a badass and going to save your daughter, you go around raising the money. Boooo! And the way you earn the money is not by doing pirate-like things (ex. Breaking into the governor's house and stealing his food and booty or downloading songs illegally), but trading goods! Like I said earlier, this game is a disgrace to the word ‘Pirate‘.
The only reason I gave this a 2 is because the name “Bloodthroat” kicks serious ass.
Gameplay- 4
As I mentioned above, you do very little pirate-ing in this game. The game consists of sailing around looking for merchants and selling stuff in order to raise the gold. If you sink a ship, you can also steal some booty and their captain‘s log. The captain's log gives you information on goods and sometimes gives clues on where you can find Bloodthroat and show him who's boss.
As I said, you can fight other ships. To do this you must select “Powder-Canons-Push Rod” in that order. But the safer bet is to just avoid battles as much as possible. You can hire a crew, but you must also get food in order to keep your crew feed.
Graphics/Sound- 5
It's some colors and bleeping sounds. While impressive at the time it was created, it's still a Commodore 64 game. What did you expect?
Play Time/Replay-ability - 1
Chances are you'll beat the game in less than thirty minutes. And after that, you probably wont want to play it again.
Overall- 3
In my experience, I felt this game robbed me of thirty minutes of good TV time. Honestly, this game is not worth you time. It's extremely hard to find and in the end is just not that good. But different strokes for different folks I guess…
