UK: Amstrad intros Series 5 PCs - Amstrad ACL 386SX color laptop; PC5086, PC5286 microcomputers; PCW 9256, 9256 Plus word processors - product announcement

UK: AMSTRAD INTROS SERIES 5 PCS 09/19/91 LONDON, ENGLAND, 1991 SEP 19 (NB) -- Amstrad has unveiled its new Series 5 range of PCs, as well as two new PCW series word processors at the Business Computing Show in London.

In addition to the new product unveilings, Amstrad has shown its ACL 386SX colour laptop, which will ship in Europe next month. The company's two notebooks, the ANB 286SX20 and the ANB 386SX40, introduced at the Cebit computer show in March of this year, will also ship in the same time frame, Amstrad officials announced.

Amstrad Chairman Alan Sugar, said: "Our new Series 5 range of computer products is further evidence of our belief that the market is ready for competitively priced, small footprint desktop models for users who do not need truly massive expansion capability, but who do not want uncluttered desks."

"Our first small footprint model, the highly specified PC 4386SX, known as the Shoehorn, is now shipping in volume and we believe that today's 5086 and 5286 models will attract a substantial market following," he added.

Sugar went on to say that the company's PCW word processors have been a "brilliant and enduring success, but it is now time to update them."

"Accordingly, we have made radical design and cosmetic changes and will in future ship them with 3.5-inch disk drives," he said.

"We are also showing for the first time in the U.K. our colour laptop, the ACL 386SXm which we will start to ship next month at UKP 3,999, and our two notebook products, the ANB 386SX20, which will retail at UKP 1,399, and the ANB 386SX40, which will be retailed at UKP 1,699," he added.

The new Series 5 PCs include an 8MHz 8086-based entry-level machine and an 16MHz 80286-based system. Both are small footprint units measuring 30 x 27 x 7cm. According to Amstrad, just as with the PC4386SX, the Series 5 machines reaffirm the company's belief that a large percentage of the market now requires smaller footprint PCs that do not compromise on power and performance.

The PC5086 and 5286 are being sold with a choice of three 14-inch monitors: a flat screen VGA monochrome display; a mid-resolution (0.42-inch) VGA colour; and a high resolution (0.29-inch) VGA colour display.

The PC5086 comes with 640K of RAM as standard and ranges in price from UKP 399 to UKP 849. The PC5286 comes with 1MB of RAM and a choice of single or dual floppy drives, as well as a 40MB hard drive. Pricing ranges from UKP 549 to UKP 999.

The PCW 9256 and 9256 Plus, meanwhile, are updated models of Amstrad's existing PCW word processing machines. The basic model retails for UKP 349 for a system unit with printer and paper-white monitor. The PCW 9256 Plus comes into two configurations -- UKP 449 with a daisy-wheel printer or UKP 549 for a Canon Bubblejet BJ-10e printer.

All the new machines will ship to the UK retail channel over the next few weeks, said Amstrad.
