The Nintendo DS has taken another milestone step, according to the latest financial figures from the company. Its 2009 fiscal report today announced that the DS has reached a life-to-date sales number of 128.89 million units. The number is significant because it marks the official passing of the Game Boy's lifetime sales, which previously held the record for the best-selling handheld system. This was no doubt bolstered by 12.29 million units sold in the Americas alone during the year, which broke Nintendo's own hardware sales records. Of course, Nintendo was helped along by releasing four different versions of the DS throughout its lifespan.
The DS software front also saw a nice bump, after titles like The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver joined the prestigious club of million-seller titles. For DS software, this brings the grand total of games that passed the million mark to 114, as compared with 91 at the close of last year's fiscal results. Despite taking a dip in profits, Nintendo seems to be doing just fine.
