After looking like the DS Lite was going to be discontinued last month, Nintendo today announced it was dropping the price of the system. The system will be available for $99.99 beginning on June 5, the first time its price has been cut since releasing at $129.99.

The new price makes it a full $150 cheaper than the new 3DS, $50 less than a DSi, $70 less than a DSi XL, and $30 less than a PSP 3000. The Lite was launched in 2006 as the DS' very first redesign.

Nintendo also announced that it would be releasing six Mario titles for DS in new, red boxes (pictured above) to make them stick out better -- a smart move given the huge number of DS titles that are out there. Those six games include New Super Mario Bros., Mario Kart DS, Super Mario 64 DS, Mario Party DS, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem. There was no word on price cuts for any of those titles. New Super Mario Bros. still, incredibly enough, sells for the same $34.99 even after five years on the market and will apparently continue to do so for the time being.
