"Acclaim pulls through with this one"

Acclaim's All-Star Baseball for Gamecube is very solid. The gameplay isn't anything new, but the tried and true system still works like a charm on a sports fan like me. Now onto the scores.

Graphics 9/10
It's a Gamecube game, of course the graphics are going to be good. But seriously, the stadiums are very well done. As out the players, complete with personal batting stances and wind ups in certain instances. They're are also replays after every ball in play. These are good for the most part, although I do have one gripe. Often times, the batter in the replay swings ridiculously late. Nothing major, but mentionable nonetheless. I'll cover the menus here too since it seems appropriate. They're done very well, no complaints from me. Although finding a team takes some getting used to. The graphics, like this whole game, are solid all around, and very nice to look at.

Sound 6/10
For starters, there's like one song that plays in all the menus: options, team selection, roster set up, ect. And it's super annoying. The commentators are done pretty well, but nothing about them wowed me. You'll often grow tired of the color man repeating stats over and over, or his prediction of the Yankees reigning supreme in 2002. He also likes players that hustle. The cracks of the bat are there to. Although nowhere near excellent, the sound is manageable. And it doesn't weigh hard on the game's final score.

The Baseball 8/10
First up in the baseball section is the batting. Definite props for this. Ball control is excellent. If I want to hit a ground ball to the right side to advance the runner to third, I can do it dammit. If I then want to hit the sac fly, I'll do that and have my bag of chips. The C-Stick is used to control where the batter hits the ball, and it's done quite well. Also, one can hit for contact or power. The power zones are deemed by player. Sammy Sosa has a massive one, while Brian L. Hunter's is barely there. Also, the size of the contact/power zones vary if the batter is facing a righty or a lefty, which is a cool feature. Running will also be included in this section. However there isn't much to tell here. The controls are good and responsive, and overall it is near flawless. One last thing on batting: too many gap doubles.
The pitching is also done quite well. The amount of pitches for a pitcher are very realistic. As if the pitchers ability. Randy Johnson can actually start his slider at the head of a lefty and still get it in the zone. The stamina also goes well, but it depletes too quickly sometimes. Again, the pitching is done well.
Fielding is next on the agenda. This is probably the least user friendly area. The fielders take too long to respond when you tell them to move or throw. And often my shortstop will freeze on a chance to turn two. This doesn't happen all the time, but it still hurts when it does. The outfielders are done well, though, I can't complain about them. Also, the dives for the infielders leave something to be desired. Every dive is a lunge in the air to the right or left. It's very difficult to stop a ground ball with a dive, unless the computer does it for you.
AI is the last section in this um... section. The AI doesn't get cheap much, but it does in one particular area and it makes me so angry!!! The computer makes Willie Mays basket catches on nearly every fly ball. Sometimes it will start running late so that it makes a basket catch. Also, the outfielders occasionally make ridiculous catches that ruin the realism. The pitching and batting AI is very good though.

The Game Modes 10/10
The game modes in this are fantastic. Exhibitions are very well done, and it's fun to play with the hidden teams that are unlocked. Season gets the job done too, but the meat lies elsewhere. Franchise and Expansion are both extraordinary, time consuming BEASTS! In franchise, you, yes YOU, become the owner, GM, manager, player, pitching coach, fan in section 309, and Bud Selig of your team of choice. Trades and free agencies are there, as is a farm team. The game also keeps very comprehensive stats. And the best part - no strikes! In expansion, you start a franchise with, you guessed it, an expansion team. Want to make the Alaska Burros? You got it. Utah Swingers? Them too. Left Montana Big Boys? Well, no luck there. There's a certain number of locations and nicknames to chose from. And thus, a draft commences and your franchise begins with an expansion team. Also, the game has a collecting game in it's player cards. You earn points for doing certain things in a game and you use the points to purchase packs of cards. Teams are unlocked this way, and it's neat to see all the different players.

Closing Thoughts
Definitely a good buy for baseball fans. The franchise and expansion modes are worth the money, and the game won't disapoint.
