"The greatest Sonic game you have never heard of."

Back in the early 90's, you were either a Nintendo gamer or a Sega gamer. There were a few who liked both but choosing which company you supported was much more than what it's today since there are more than just two companies on the market. While the Sega Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo were pretty much even, the Game Boy out sold the Game Gear for many reasons. The Game Gear sold about 100 million less units then the Game Boy, the gap is that big.

Sega needed good exclusive titles in order to be able to compete the Game Boy, and what could attract more buyers than Sega's most exclusive series, the Sonic the Hedgehog series? Before Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, there had already been a couple on Sonic games released on the Game Gear, but three of them where ports from Master System games, one was a racing game and the last one was a pinball game which also was a port of a Mega Drive game, so Sonic Triple Trouble was the first Game Gear exclusive Sonic game which was a "normal" Sonic game.

This game was released just after Sonic & Knuckles had been released, but in order for this game's plot to be considered canon it has to take place between Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Even if it's not much of a spoiler I'm still not going to explain why, since it might ruin the game for those who still haven't played Sonic 3 & Knuckles and actually don't want to be spoiled.

Dr Robotnik have once again built a doom's day weapon, but he needs all chaos emeralds in order to use it at full power. It's up to our two heroes Sonic and Tails to stop Dr Robotnik from his evil plans. Knuckles the Echidna, the guardian of the Master Emeralds, thinks that Sonic & Tails also are trying to use the Chaos Emerald's power to cause evil so he have joined forces with Dr Robotnik to stop them, just like in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on the Mega Drive.

But in this game that is not all, there's another dude who also want to get his hands on the Chaos Emeralds. His name is Nack the Weasel, known as Fang the Sniper in Japan. He doesn't care about what kind of secret power the Chaos Emeralds have, what he is after is the money he get when he sells the Chaos Emeralds to rich people who love pretty gems. This one of the few games we see Nack in, but it's rumored that he will be in the new Sonic Unleashed.

Just like in just about every Sonic game released after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, you can either play as Sonic the Hedgehog or as Miles "Tails" Prower. I dunno if Sonic is actually any faster than Tails but there are some different things about them. Sonic for example can find both a Jet Skateboard that he can use to fly for a short while and in one stage Sonic can also use a Snowboard, as you can see on the game's cover art.

Tails on the other can of course use his two tails to fly and reach places that are much more difficult to reach if you play as Sonic, and he can also use a submarine in one of the stages. Neither Sonic or Tails got any big advantage over the other character so I think you can just pick to play as the character that you just like more.

You play this game as you play any of the other 2D Sonic games, and the game doesn't stand out much in that way, after all why try to improve a perfect concept? However something unique for this game is that just because you took some damage it doesn't mean that you lose all your rings. I think that Sonic doesn't lose as much rings as Tails do but I'm not sure about this. However this makes this game a bit less challenging than the previous Sonic games on the system.

The bonus stages are the most unique thing about this game compared to the others in the series. In order to get one you have to find a Chaos Emerald box on the stage and have more than 50 rings. Then the bonus stage can either be a time limited stage where you have to reach and beat Nack or it's a stage where you fly the same helicopter that our heroes used in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble is not the absolute best game in the series, but it's one great game for the Sega Game Gear. It got Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Dr Robotnik, Metal Sonic and Nack. And did I mention that the stages are all great too? What more can you ask of a Sonic game?
